The Legends Farm Story
Farming, raising fine animals and living a rural life style has always been in the Baird's hearts. Jim was
born on his family farm in Tennessee and Deborah grew up training, showing and breeding Warmblood
horses. A farm which they could manage full time and develop into a profitable business was the
Baird's lifelong dream and aspiration. Jim and Deborah met alpacas for the first time at a show in
Louisville and instantly fell in love with them and the incredible fiber they produce. After researching
alpacas with farm and show visits, and then studying the growth and sophistication of the industry, the
Bairds concluded alpacas would be a great agripreneurial opportunity. It was time to follow their hearts.
Jim retired from a 30-year career with a railroad, and Deborah sold her interest in a graphic design
firm-leaving behind a 20-year career in marketing and design. In 2000, the Bairds purchased a
140-acre farm and began renovation on existing barns and out buildings, as well as adding new
fencing and alpaca shelters. By 2003, they were full time alpaca farmers and Legends Farm was
ready for business.
Legends Farm is located in Augusta, Kentucky on the Ohio River, in an area steeped in history
and legends. Kentucky's picturesque hills, bluffs and river views make a visit to Legends Farm a
thoroughly enjoyable experience. The farm's fertile ground once supported food crops, tobacco
and a bountiful vineyard. This historic setting is now the proud home to one of
Kentucky's finest alpaca farms. Visitors are always welcome and the Bairds will be happy to help
with travel arrangements and overnight reservations at the Parkview Inn in Augusta or a local
Bed-and-Breakfast.
